Rameshwaram, on the southern tip of India, is counted among the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites and is home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. According to tradition, Lord Rama worshipped Shiva here before his journey to Lanka, which makes the shore especially holy.
Pilgrims come to Rameshwaram to bathe in the sea at Agni Theertham and to perform rituals for their ancestors — tarpan, shraddha and pind daan. Many families also travel on to Dhanushkodi, where the ashes of a departed loved one are immersed.
